Then I've realized that designing the layout of a galaxy was not that hard, and I've released Stardust, a very early version of the new mod I've always wanted. So for a few years, I had this crazy idea of having procedurally generated galaxies in a game that was not at all made for that. Always having to play in the same galaxy was the main reason why I eventually quit X3. Even though combat in X3 is "ok", I've always felt that it could be greatly improved, not only by overhauling all ship stats and characteristics, but also by changing the AI behavior and rewrite their scripts. Having an empire is about macro management, not micro management. X3 being about managing an empire, it should be intuitive to replace your ships, give them global orders, automatically put them into a fleet, repair them, etc. Products are artificially consumed and the AI does not use them to make their ships or stations. Even though Litcube has changed them quite deeply, the system remained the same: ships were created out of thin air and spawned around shipyards, with very basic goals and poor AI. This is the name of automated ships in X3. I've developed Mayhem 2 for about 4 years (part time, obviously), but at the end I didn't want to play it anymore because of some important problems I had with X3: I also wanted to not make everything orbiting around money, so I've implemented a way to craft your ships, stations, weapons and equipment. I had understood that conquering sectors is not only about changing the race of a sector, it's about all the consequences and the price that you and the AI have to pay to achieve it. I've always loved games where territory war is an important element of gameplay, it gives replayability and an experience often more intense and more customizable than story-based games. Mayhem 1 began one year later with the very primitive idea of making it possible to conquer new sectors. ![]() I've started modding X3 in 2014 after the release of Litcube's Universe. It has mostly been a full time job and is today a robust mod, fully playable, and replayable! Mayhem 3 has been in development since December 2019.

In November 2007 Umezu’s anime studio, Arms, announced that the release of Kite Liberator would be delayed in order to give the staff more time to work on the project. It’s sad to say that despite having a longer running time than either A-Kite or Mezzo, all of the action scenes in Kite Liberator combined aren’t as exciting as singular action set pieces from Umezu’s earlier work. Furthermore, the tense, exciting, and death-defying action that characterized A-Kite and Mezzo Forte is noticably absent in Kite Liberator. And the graphic violence in Kite Liberator feels lessened in both frequency and visual impact. While Kite Liberator isn’t entirely sanitized, the graphic sex of Yellow Star, A-Kite, and Mezzo is gone. I don’t know how much, if any American influence compromised the content of Kite Liberator, but plans for an American release certainly do seem to have affected the production. Unlike Umetsu’s previous action anime projects that were produced primarily for Japanese release, Kite Liberator was co-financed by an American distributor and was released practically simultaneously in Japan and America. Regrettably, the long awaited Kite Liberator doesn’t match up to the quality of any of these prior titles, including even the very uneven Mezzo television series. Countless anime fans are also familiar with director Yasuomi Umetsu’s other “girls with guns” anime titles Cool Devices operation 7: Yellow Star, A-Kite, Mezzo Forte, and Mezzo. I have encountered consistent and unanimous confused and disappointed responses to the OVA from viewers that have watched it.įans have anxiously waited ten years since the 1998 release of A-Kite to see a sequel. I’d like to be able to definitively explain what went “wrong” with Kite Liberator, but regrettably I haven’t encountered any statements from either creator/director Yasuomi Umetsu or American co-producer/distributor Media Blasters. I’d hate to see it just stop right in the middle of everything like this. What’s going on? Is that it? Are there plans for a second episode, or is one likely at any point soon? After so many years, we finally got a sequel to Kite. Well, maybe even ended isn’t the right word it just stopped in the middle of everything and the credits rolled. I was really, really enjoying it and then it just ended. ![]() I just finished watching the recent OVA Kite Liberator. ![]() Unfortunately, complications would soon arise after the Alpha release. Fans could only eagerly anticipate the next update, waiting to see what else was in store. With such massive support, and plenty of space to improve, it looked like the next indie hit had truly arrived. There's basically endless content to explore." "We emphasize the exploration part because of the huge procedural world. "I think loot finding is one of the most addictive aspects of an RPG, so we included a lot of different items," he added. Also group gameplay is really interesting with varying classes. In my opinion it adds so much to the replay value of a game. "I really like having completely separate classes, each with a different gameplay. > "I'm a big World of Warcraft fan, also Diablo and Secret of Mana were big influences," he said. But it showed plenty of promise for an alpha build, and was clearly far more than just another Minecraft clone or generic RPG despite the lead developer’s inspirations. Obviously not everyone was impressed, with many criticizing the lack of depth and challenge after the first dozen or so hours. Guides were quickly written to help out new players, Youtube coverage gained millions of views, it was a near sensation as many took to the game’s fun combat and exploration. And while not the smoothest of launches, partly thanks to a DDOS attack on the game’s servers during its initial release, people would quickly flock to explore the blocky world Wollay created with glee. When the alpha build was suddenly released in July for $20, many were ecstatic to finally get their hands on a game with years of buildup. Later inclusion of a full fledged multiplayer mode, and the depth of the world and monsters the player would be able to explore and conquer, only further drove hype through the roof. Though a deal between him and Notch ultimately didn’t come to fruition, his progress and unique vision continued to generate substantial support for what looked like the next smash indie project. The game’s increasing popularity even led to the developer being offered a position at Mojang for his talents. What started out as something to work on in Wollay’s free time looked like it was becoming so much more. More focus was placed on fighting monsters, learning the ins and outs of the simple combat system to defeat enemies while traversing the massive world. Despite its blocky exterior, Cube World played much more like an Action RPG, with exploration and quests rewarding players with new skills in their chosen class and better equipment. ![]() By 2012, he had already garnered a strong fanbase, and it was clear this was far more than just some attempt at recreating the burgeoning success of Minecraft. Soon, the creator would make his own website for the game, and his Youtube channel quickly amassed a solid viewership as the project progressed rapidly in scope and complexity. Initially, he pitched the title as a sort of hobby project, but awareness would only grow over the next few years as Cube World became much bigger than what most probably imagined. It was clear Minecraft was his main inspiration, promising a procedurally generated world that the player could explore to their heart’s content while slaying monsters and delving into dungeons. Initially, announced on the TIGsource forums, it already began catching headlines a few weeks in as Wolfram (or Wollay as he’s more commonly referred to) would explain his vision for the game. And despite its ambition and scope initially launching the game to internet stardom, Cube World has become synonymous with disappointment and development hell throughout its eight year (and counting) history.Ĭube World first began development in June 2011, created by a developer by the name of Wolfram von Funck along with his wife, Sarah. Of course, the indie scene is also no stranger to failed and underwhelming projects. From platformers like Super Meat Boy to experimental projects like Braid, it became easier than ever for independent creators to enter the industry as it entered the new decade. But by the early 2010s, the indie scene began to blossom as new titles independently created and published by developers garnered enormous success. Other units should be sent off to do battle and level up, and capture oil and iron sources - the game’s primary resources. Base building falls on the engineers, who can also build up barricades, defenses, and repair mechs. Players start out with a small number of resources and units for their headquarters, their barracks for human units, and their workshop for mech units. ![]() The classic loop is, as you can guess, present and unchanged in Iron Harvest. With 21 missions and 21 cutscenes across three campaigns and factions, the single player in undoubtedly Iron Harvest’s highlight.īuild a base, spawn units, gather resources and win fights, and upgrade - rinse and repeat. Iron Harvest’s campaigns are well paced, keeping me playing mission after mission without much burnout. What’s important to note is that nothing overstays its welcome. Many take you away from building up your base and towards more interesting mechanics, like stealth. The two following campaigns, Rusviet and Saxony, introduce even more variety into the mix. The Polanian campaign doubles as a tutorial for the game, introducing you to all the tools at your disposal, and all the tricky situations where you might find yourself. The story of Iron Harvest remains easy to follow, with characters you care for on and off the battlefield. Doubly so given the very impersonal nature of RTS, where you typically control countless faceless units from above. The game deserves praise for representing such a grand story with so many moving parts through a very intimate lens. The Polanian Republic is up first, introducing you to Anna Kos and her bear, Wojtek. Unfortunately, as the campaigns is entirely linear, you cannot start with the faction of your choosing. Every campaign features seven lengthy missions with cutscenes interspersed between them. The meaty single-player mode is broken up into three faction campaigns, each one continuing where the previous left off. It’s the unmasking of this organization that unites the heroes of the game’s three factions: the Polanian Republic, the Rusviet Union, and the Saxony Empire. It sees a post-Great War Europe, dipped in dieselpunk aesthetics, on the brink of yet another war - courtesy of a shadowy cabal and its influential members. Iron Harvest finds its setting in Jakub Różalski’s alternate-history 1920s, something it shares with the popular board game, Scythe. You quickly forget what’s missing, and commit yourself fully to the joyous process of obliterating bases. The game is a smart, community-led celebration of RTS, and a love letter to the games that captivated so many gamers. But, King Art Games is helping to revitalize the sub-genre in its own way. Presently, it lacks the complexity of the sub-genres favorites, and is without any true novelty or innovation. It’s anybody’s guess whether or not Iron Harvest can grow into a game capable of dethroning RTS’ aging titans. Age of Empires II, StarCraft II, and Company of Heroes 2 continue their lengthy reign, while newcomers seldom do more than kick up a bit of dust. But despite its perceived prominence in today’s space, some say the sub-genre has plateaued. Decades of virtual battlefields scarred by bullets, stained with blood, and seared by bombs. Decades of commanding armies, both large and small, in a struggle against impossible odds. And conquer it did RTS has since grown into a goliath of a sub-genre. Four decades ago, real-time strategy put down its roots in preparation for its conquest of the strategy world. |
